Pregnancy Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a form of very light massage that encourages lymph flow in the body. The lymph system delivers nutrients to the cells and carries away excess water, cellular waste, bacteria, viruses and toxins.
By stimulating the lymphatic system the therapist helps drain puffy, swollen tissues, supports the body’s immune system and aids in the body’s natural waste removal or detoxification.

How does it help during pregnancy?

If you are suffering from tired feet or water retention (including swollen feet, ankles & calves), MLD during pregnancy can provide very effective relief. This gentle massage technique helps to encourage the flow and release of excess fluid held within the tissues just below the skin. This is why many women find it very beneficial especially during the later stages of pregnancy, helping to treat or prevent oedema (fluid retention).
This massage technique can bring immediate relief, providing you with the comfort you deserve during your pregnancy.

Is it safe?

MLD is a very safe treatment, and is performed at The Fitzwilliam Private Clinic by our fully qualified therapist. The massage can be performed throughout the entire pregnancy. However, during the first trimester we would require a letter from your doctor or attending physician approving the therapy before commencing your treatment.
The therapy can also be performed using essential oils (at your request) to help calm and relax you.
Why suffer pain when you can have a more comfortable pregnancy?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a form of massage that encourages lymph flow in the body.

MLD is effective in treating:

Poor circulation
Water retention
Reduce swelling, puffiness and blotches
Lymphoedema
It is a popular and effective treatment for cellulite
Weight loss
It helps your body fight infection and speed up healing and recovery from illness

Benefits

Removal of metabolic wastes, excess water, toxins, bacteria, large protein molecules & foreign substances from the tissues.
Pain relief – by its use of rhythmical and precise hand movements, MLD works to alleviate pain by reducing the pain signals sent to the brain.
Relieves stress through relaxation of the sympathetic nervous system.
Immune system support & enhancement.

What happens during treatment?

This massage treatment takes place in a heated room as warmth is an important factor in increasing lymphatic flow. Lymphatic Drainage massage is given on a massage table, and you will be draped in discreetly placed towels. The therapist will generally work their way up from your feet unless any specialist requirements are being adhered to. Our full body lymph drainage lasts for 1 hour.
MLD is performed at The Fitzwilliam Private Clinic by our fully qualified therapist.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Deep tissue massage is one form of massage therapy that focuses on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue in the body. Some of the same strokes as classic massage therapy may be used, but the movement is generally slower and the pressure will be deeper and concentrated on the areas where the patient feels tension and pain.
Deep Tissue massage can be especially helpful for athletes who expose their muscles to daily, intensive conditioning. This type of massage will noticeably loosen muscles, alleviate pain, and increase mobility – all significant benefits for an athlete. However, you don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy the benefits of deep tissue massage. Those suffering from certain conditions may also find deep tissue massage to be quite therapeutic. Sufferers of chronic pain, fibromyalgia, oedema, muscle cramping, pain after a car accident, and even carpal tunnel syndrome may find significant relief from deep tissue massage.
Benefits: Reduces Chronic Pain, Improves Blood Pressure, Breaks Up Scar Tissue, Rehabilitates Injured Muscles, Stress Relief

SPORTS MASSAGE

Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasises prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles
and tendons.
But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area.
Benefits: Improves flexibility and range of motion, Improves circulation, Relieves muscle tension, Stimulates the immune system, Relieves chronic pain

SWEDISH MASSAGE

Swedish massage therapy is the modality that comes to mind when most people think about massage. As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart.
But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.
