Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation - a common condition which is easily treatable.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common sexual problem in men and is defined as a condition in which a man ejaculates earlier that he or his partner would like him to.

Most men experience PE at least once in their lives and about 1 in 3 men do so on a regular basis. One of the most important things to realise is that unless treated, the on-going fear of PE will make the problem worse.

If you are quite young, the chances are that PE will only be a temporary inconvenience for you and your partner. If you are older, we can still treat it quite simply once the cause has been identified.

If you think you might be suffering from PE, talk to a doctor who knows exactly what you’re going through, in a discrete, compassionate consultation at the Fitzwilliam Private Clinic.

What Causes PE?

PE can be caused by psychological or physical factors. It can also develop as the result of an unhealthy lifestyle.

The most common psychological causes:

  • Stress
  • Guilt
  • Anxiety
  • Depression or a lack of confidence
  • Insecurity through a perceived lack of sexual experience

Physical causes can include

  • Neurological conditions including spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis
  • Vascular problems
  • Effects of alcohol, drugs and nicotine (even relatively moderate intake levels)

What happens during the appointment?

You will be seen by Dr. Pearse Phelan, our resident specialist. After taking your medical history he will complete a medical examination to complete his diagnosis. From here Dr. Phelan will outline the best course of treatment for you.

What does the treatment include?

Once we have confirmed that you are indeed suffering from PE and have established the causes, your Fitzwilliam Private Clinic doctor will discuss your treatment options with you.

There has been a lot of work done in this area and as a result there are many medical choices open to you. PE can be worse in some men than others so your doctor will help you to decide which methods may improve your condition.

There are medications which, for example, stimulate the penis for longer so that you can prolong sexual intercourse before reaching climax. Often considered the most reliable method of treatment, this medication can be taken by the majority of sufferers.

You and your partner may also benefit by talking openly about your condition with a therapist and we will be happy to refer you to a psychologist or counsellor who will help you in a non-judgmental environment.
